Veterans Day is about more than remembrance—it’s about recognizing the ongoing struggles and choices veterans make for their well-being. At Vigor, we believe every veteran deserves support, respect, and the tools to live their best version of themselves. For a growing number of veterans, cannabis is an important part of that journey.

Why Veterans Turn to Cannabis

Data shows veterans use cannabis at much higher rates than the general population. In 2019, nearly 13 percent of veterans reported marijuana use in the past year, up from just over 8 percent in 2013. Moreover, among veterans with PTSD, nearly 30 percent reported cannabis use in the past year, and 41 percent of veteran cannabis users say they use it specifically for medical purposes—double the rate seen in the general population.

Veterans often report using cannabis to help manage chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, and insomnia. Research finds that 91 percent of medically-engaged veterans experience a higher quality of life, and many report reducing use of alcohol, opioids, or other prescription medications thanks to medicinal cannabis. We hear stories each week from veterans who find relief with tinctures for anxiety, edibles for pain and rest, or topicals for joint support—empowering real-life change and the freedom to choose a healthier routine.

Stigma and Struggles

Despite these benefits, many veterans still face stigma. Federal law classifies cannabis as a Schedule I substance, so VA hospitals strictly prohibit it—and VA doctors are not allowed to prescribe or recommend it to patients, even in states where usage is legal. This complicates conversations and makes open dialogue with primary providers difficult. Veterans must often seek guidance outside the VA network, making access to trustworthy education even more critical.

Physicians themselves can be hesitant, lacking training or current information about cannabis’s therapeutic applications. Veterans are sometimes left to navigate complex products and dosing without expert support, risking a lack of clarity and safety. This can worsen the sense of isolation and reinforce outdated stigmas around cannabis use.

At Vigor, we’re committed to listening and providing compassionate, credible guidance. We help veterans explore a variety of options—including discreet gummies for pain, soothing tinctures for stress, and flower for whole plant options and active lifestyles. Our pharmacist-led team can empower every customer to make intentional choices for their wellness.
